In cooperation with the Reggio School of Tokyo (RST), an international preschool and kindergarten in Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, 11 students from the Oak class aged 5-6 visited the university! Professor Sampei Takada, a ceramic artist and educator in the Department of Art and Design at Tokyo Kasei University, interacted with the Reggio children and TKU students through pottery making activities. During this event, participation was expanded to include not only the forming process, but also painting and glazing across two workshops, so that the children could be more involved in the creation of their own work.
"The addition of the glazing process seems to have helped the children develop an attachment to their work." says Prof. Takada. One of the advantages of this workshop, which transcends age groups, is that by having fun with the children and creating things together, we can deepen our understanding of each other, build cooperative relationships, stimulate each other's creativity, and share a sense of accomplishment.
The children were also assisted by 22 TKU students who participated in the specialist training program ‘Introduction to Early Childhood and Primary Education - Approaches and Practices’ in New Zealand last spring. After lunch at the cafeteria, the TKU students introduced themselves in English to the groups of children in the gym, and then participated in traditional Japanese games and other activities similar to those in Japanese kindergartens. The children enjoyed the Japanese games, which they had not experienced before, and were well received by the RST teachers.
Associate Professor Yoko Arai of the Department of Child Education and Care, who observed the workshop, commented that, "Although the same materials were used, children's expressions were diverse, and there were things to learn from the children's efforts to create their own artwork. Many TKU students were also interested in the attitude of the RST teachers, who helped the children to realize what they wanted to express.”
Finally, we would like to acknowledge the understanding of the RST teachers, the children’s parents, and the cooperation of the university's Department of Art and Design, Department of Child Education and Care, Department of Elementary Education, and all related departments who provided assistance.
