Outline of Tokyo Kasei Graduate School
■I .Purpose
The graduate school of this University (hereinafter referred to as the University), which is based on education curricula of the faculties, carries out research and instruction of highly professional and academic theories and their application and nurtures its minute and deep academic knowledge and research ability, with the purpose of contributing to the cultural development of a wide section of society.
■II. Outline
The University originated from a Japanese and foreign style dressmaking learning place established by Tatsugoro Watanabe in Yushima in Tokyo in 1881. It was renamed as the Tokyo Women’s Foreign Style Dressmaking School in 1891, and was developed to become the Tokyo Women’s Professional School in 1922. The Professional School was war-damaged and moved to the former site of the Tokyo Second Arms Factory, which was located in the former site of a suburban residence of the state of Kaga, received permission to function as a college under a new system ahead of the other women’s schools in 1949, and became the Tokyo Domestic Science College consisting of the clothing course and the living course. After that, the clothing course was integrated into the living course, and then the faculty of domestic science comprising the juvenile studies course, nutrition course, and dress & ornament course in 1962. Further, the College set up the faculty of arts comprising the English language and English literature course and psychological pedagogy course in Sayama City, expecting to be developing to a university at the request of regional society in 1985. The University has produced its graduates for 125 years since its foundation, contributing to a wide range of development of society until the present times.
During the period, since the foundation of the Tokyo Domestic Science College in 1949, the Life Science Institute and Clothing Science Institute were founded to support research activities of instructors as its ancillary facilities. Then, in 1972, preparation for the substantiation of each Research Room was carried out by closing the Clothing Science Institute and keeping only the Life Science Institute. Since then, the Institute has functioned as a means of exchanging students from the USA at that time, and that of providing a training institution to people who would like to continue research for a further two years, after graduating from the four-year College course. Finally in 1988, the foundation of the Graduate School for the Domestic Science Research Course, which had been a long-cherished desire of the University, became reality on the basis of the actual results of the Institute.
After that, authorization for setting up a course specializing in Child Science and one specializing in Human Life (the latter doctorate course) were granted in 1991 and 1992 respectively.
Setting up the master course for research of literature (specializing in English language and English Literature, and Psychological Pedagogy) was approved in 1995, since then education and research have been provided as a Graduate School for these two research courses.

■VI. Summary of Each Specialty, Class Subjects and Lecture Contents
1. Summary of Each Specialty
(1) Science of Food Nutrition (master course)
Interest in people’s health, lifestyle diseases and aging has recently increased in society. It has been indicated that there is a strong relationship between these problems and our daily food intake, and it is necessary to pursue various issues such as maintenance of health, prevention of lifestyle diseases and clarification of the mechanism of aging, and improve their state from the aspect of the science of food nutrition. The contents of instruction of this specialty comprise four fields, i.e., Science of Food Application, Science of Health Care, Science of Nutrition, Science of Health Nutrition.
This course will enable students to undertake original research subjects under the provision of higher and professional classes in relation to each subject already studied in the undergraduate courses, and to gain general ability in a wider field, while increasing knowledge in other relevant fields.
(2) Clothing Design & Construction (master course)
A major change has been seen in recent years in the form of clothing lifestyle and demand for beauty in our life, natural environment surrounding us, etc. New raw materials and processing technologies are developed every year, and these new raw materials are extensively used not only for clothing but also for interior decoration in our living environment. With regards to the instruction contents of this specialty, the course provides education and research to students, in order to cope with such changing times, under new curricula where dress & its ornaments comprising six fields, i.e., clothing materials, clothing management, clothing composition, culture of dress & ornaments, design & construction, and technical art, are merged with the arts, with the central aim for pursuit of clothing which is comfortable to wear, beautiful to view, easy to handle, and can be maintained in its initial efficiency, and pursuit of arts in our daily life. In addition, the course puts emphasis on fostering specialists with a wide and deep view.
(3) Child Science (master course)
Fostering sound-minded children is an essential issue for the future of mankind. Accurate understanding of the growth and development of children especially in the rapidly changing modern society and the environment and method for sound fostering are now required. This course will provide guidance of modern theories and methods, with historical examination, in the fields of Science of Nurture, Science of Childraising Consultation, Science of Child Education, Science of Education Consultation, and Science of Course Education. The feature of the specialization in this course is that the course emphasizes not only scientific research, but also child culture such as literature, design & construction, and music which foster sensitivity in children. This course is made not only for the promotion of research which pursues problems of infants and children in modern society but also for the training of highly sensitive and research-minded educators for kindergartens and elementary schools by carrying out research in these fields.
(4) Science of Human Life (Latter doctorate course)
This course was set up to carry out comprehensive research into human life, meeting needs due to higher technological innovation and diversified social circumstances, in anticipation of merging and interdisciplinary development in various domains, by removing the demarcation of the three master courses. This course comprises four fields, i.e., Science of Human Development, Science of Living Environment, Science of Living Materials, and Science of Living Management, as its main structure. In the field of Science of Human Development. approach is carried out in the processes of development in the lifetimes of human beings both from the emotional aspect including development psychology and educational viewpoints and from the scientific aspect of human physiology, health, nutrition, etc., and human beings who are the subjects of the life study thus studied from the aspects of body and mind, by carrying out analyses and researches from two directions. In the field of Science of Living Environment, food, clothing and housing are analyzed and examined firstly as three elements in the living environment, and the environment surrounding children will then be added to analyze and examine the relationship between them. Furthermore, examination will be carried out from the viewpoints of the involvement of living things in general. In Science of Living Materials, analysis and examination are carried out with respect to science relating to the function of raw materials in food, clothing and housing, and, in addition, human beings are correctly understood and pursued from the viewpoints of life science and human engineering, on the basis of state of the art biotechnology. In the field of Science of Living Management, establishment of comprehensive and professional knowledge is eventually pursued as researchers in human life in general by carrying out research of systematization and methods of management with respect to the subjects of a diversified wide range of lifestyles taken with human beings as their centre.
